Skype interviews are far preferable to recruitment fairs and make much more sense than flying across the world at huge expense.<\/h4>\n<p>However, interviewing on Skype can be tricky, especially if it is your first time. \u00a0Read our top ten Skype interview tips to get the best chance of leaving a good impression on the interviewer.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teacherhorizons.com\/advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/skype-interview.jpg\" alt=\"Skype interview tips\" width=\"200\" height=\"194\" \/>Carry out your research<\/strong>.\u00a0Just like in a face-to-face interview, make sure you have fully explored the school website, their Teacher Horizons profile and any information on the curricula they teach if it is your first time teaching the IB for example. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherhorizons.com\/advice\/assessing-and-researching-international-schools\/\">Our article on assessing and researching international schools<\/a>\u00a0will help.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dress formally.\u00a0<\/strong>Make sure you are wearing a professional dress (at least for your top half!) and look presentable as you would at a face-to-face interview.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test your equipment. \u00a0<\/strong>Use a test call to make sure your microphone and speakers are both working well.\u00a0 It is very frustrating when one interviews candidates that haven\u2019t done this basic check before an interview. Read some tips for testing Skype\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikihow.tech\/Test-Skype\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ensure you have a good internet connection. <\/strong>\u00a0Being plugged into the internet is often quicker than wifi, try and use a good connection so that you can use the video function. It will help you and the interviewer to connect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get the camera right and look into the camera.\u00a0<\/strong>Ideally, have the camera on your computer pointing at you so that you can see your face clearly and the top of your shoulders. Many candidates look at the screen. Don\u2019t! Look at the camera as eye-to-eye contact is important.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be on time.\u00a0<\/strong>Heads are busy people. Make sure you are live on Skype at least 5 minutes early and have shared Skype contact details.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Smile.\u00a0<\/strong>It is more difficult to establish a connection with someone on Skype as you can\u2019t see people\u2019s body postures.\u00a0 A smile will really help both of you feel comfortable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask for the next steps. <\/strong>When you finish your interview, ask what the next step is and when you will expect to hear from the school.\u00a0 Chase the school up if you don\u2019t hear from them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow up with a thank you email. <\/strong>\u00a0Following up with the school after the interview is important. A quick note to confirm your interest can only help!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be yourself.\u00a0<\/strong>Just like in a face-to-face interview, try and demonstrate your personality by being yourself. \u00a0Ask questions and show you have done your research.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The underlying point I wanted to make was that whilst the format of interviews has certainly changed, the rules haven\u2019t.
